Charles Portel (1893-1954)

A painter and decorator with a passion for wallpaper, Charles Portel opens a studio in Vendôme where he creates wallpaper designs with his pupils Roland Brudieux and Jean Gourmelin. From 1941 to 1950 he is the curator of the Vendôme museum, which he helps to restore. In 1949, he organizes an exhibition on Balzac in Vendôme, and he explains in the catalogue how the writer was interested in wallpaper.
